State Insurance Laws

Missouri Auto Insurance - (MO)

Missouri drivers must carry liability auto insurance in some form, whether through self-insurance or a standard policy from an insurance company. The goal of Missouri’s auto insurance regulations is to keep citizens safe and premiums low. Collisions with uninsured or underinsured drivers result in massive costs to properly insured drivers and the insurance industry as a whole. Missouri has attempted to minimize these losses with strict mandatory insurance laws.

Auto Insurance Regulations in Missouri

  • All vehicle owners and drivers must have auto liability insurance coverage.
  • Drivers must show proof of insurance when registering a car or renewing license plates.
  • Missouri’s minimum liability amounts are: $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per collision for bodily injury, and $10,000 per collision for property damage.
  • All drivers must carry uninsured motorist coverage. The minimums are $25,000 per person for bodily injury and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury.

How to Meet Insurance Requirements

Drivers have several ways by which they can comply with Missouri’s mandatory insurance laws other than purchasing a standard liability policy:

  • Post a surety bond, deposit of money certificate, or another type of security worth $60,000 with the state’s department of revenue
  • Secure a self-insurance ID card from the department of revenue
  • File a real estate bond with the department of revenue

Sanctions for Driving Uninsured

A conviction for failing to provide proof of insurance will result in one of the three following consequences:

  1. The citation will be entered on your driving record, and four penalty points will be placed against your license
  2. The court may order the Driver License Bureau to supervise you to verify that you maintain appropriate auto liability coverage
  3. The court may decide to suspend your driver’s license
