State Insurance Laws
Mississippi has financial responsibility laws that don’t necessarily require drivers to purchase a policy with liability coverage. As long as the driver can demonstrate that he/she is financially responsible, carrying an auto insurance policy is not legally necessary. If you choose not to buy an auto insurance policy with liability coverage, the state of Mississippi will require you to provide proof of financial responsibility. Unless you have liability coverage that meets the state’s minimums, you will need to do one of the following:
Mississippi law does not allow a police office to pull you over just to verify that you have proof of insurance, but it does permit the officer to ask you for your insurance ID card during stops for other traffic violations. If you cannot provide proof of insurance, you will have to pay a fine of $1,000 for a first offense. Your driving privileges will also be suspended for a year or until you provide proof of insurance.
