Illinois Auto Insurance Guide
If you operate a vehicle in the state of Illinois, then you need to comply with the mandatory minimum auto insurance laws. In fact, according to state law, when you sign your vehicle registration application, you are affirming that your car will be adequately insured for the duration of the registration period. Once you obtain the proper coverage amount, you will also need to carry proof of insurance in your vehicle at all times. We’ll explain the state insurance requirements in more detail below.
Illinois Auto Insurance Requirements
- All motor vehicles have to be insured. If you want to operate your vehicle legally in the state of Illinois, you must carry the minimum amounts of coverage specified by the law.
- The minimum liability coverage amounts are: $20,000 for the injury or death of one person in a collision, $40,000 for the injury or death of more than one person in a collision, and $15,000 for property damage.
- You must have insurance at the time you register your vehicle. Your car must comply with auto insurance laws at the time of registration.
Enforcement
The state of Illinois enforces the mandatory minimum auto insurance laws by sending out questionnaires randomly and issuing traffic citations.
- If your car is selected by the computer at random, you will be sent a questionnaire that requests the name of your auto insurer and your policy number. The information you provide will be authenticated with the insurer you list. If you don’t return the survey or are uninsured, your license plate will get suspended.
- You can receive a traffic ticket if you are pulled over or involved in a collision and are found to be uninsured. The consequences will include suspended license plates and a $500 minimum fine for driving without insurance. If you drive your vehicle while the license plates are suspended, you will face a minimum fine of $1,000.
Suspension of Plates & Reinstatement
After a first-time offense, you can have your license plates reinstated if you pay a $100 fee and show proof of insurance. If you have more than one offense, you will have to wait four months before you are eligible for reinstatement. When the plates are suspended on a vehicle, you cannot operate it, but you can drive other cars as long as they are insured.
